Marapi, at about 2,885 m, is an active volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia, rising above the highlands near Bukittinggi, the homeland of the Minangkabau people. Forest covers its lower slopes and its summit area is a rough crater landscape. Hikers climb it from the villages of Koto Baru or Batu Palano along steep trails, often to see the sunrise.
