Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano of 1,281 m on the Gulf of Naples, Italy, best known for the eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. Today it forms the centerpiece of a national park. A path climbs to the rim of the crater, and trails on the lower slopes cross pine woods and old lava flows.
