Shipka Pass

Shipka Pass crosses the Balkan Mountains, known in Bulgaria as Stara Planina, at 1,195 m. It is best known for the battles fought here in 1877–78, commemorated by a large monument on a nearby peak. Hikers use the pass as a start for trails along the main ridge.
