Surtshellir is one of the longest lava tubes in Iceland, in the west of the country, formed by an eruption long ago. It is part of a system of caves in a lava field near Hallmundarhraun. Visitors walk into the tube with a headlamp, and guided tours lead to ice formations and rock details inside.
