The Tatra Mountains are the highest part of the Carpathians, forming the border between Poland and Slovakia, with summits reaching about 2,654 m. Granite peaks, glacial lakes and steep valleys are protected by national parks on both sides. Marked trails and mountain huts serve hikers, and Zakopane in Poland and Poprad in Slovakia are the main gateways.
