White Sands National Park

White Sands National Park in southern New Mexico protects the largest gypsum dune field in the world, a landscape of bright white sand. The dunes are cool underfoot, since gypsum does not hold heat the way ordinary sand does. Visitors walk on the dunes, slide down them on sleds and camp in the backcountry.
